24 tirthankaras

Jains honour 24 Jinas, who are also called Tirthankaras. These are spiritual leaders who reached enlightenment and were freed from the cycle of rebirth. They then taught others how to reach the same state.

Each tirthankara teaches the main ideas of Jain Philosophy, but they do so in a way that makes sense for the time they live in.

Rishabhadev is believed to be Jainism's first real founder. In Jainism, he is the first Tirthankara, and it is thought that he lived a million years ago.
Other 23 Tirthankaras succeeded him.
Mahavira is the 24th & last Tirthankara who is said to have given Jainism its present shape.
